As a junior at Grand Valley State University, I’ve always been drawn to a career in sales, despite the aspect of it being a male-dominated industry. When I began my internship at W Talent Solutions, a women-owned recruiting agency, I wasn’t sure what to fully expect. However, I shortly found out that their intentions were to welcome me and actively push me to grow in ways that I didn’t predict. This experience has reshaped my perspective on leadership, mentorship, and the kind of professional I want to become.
One of the most impactful aspects of working at a women-owned business has been seeing leadership in action. At W Talent Solutions, I am surrounded by strong, driven women who challenge industry norms and redefine their success on their own terms. Their leadership goes beyond driving revenue, it’s also about uplifting and protecting one another because, as women, we have a responsibility to support each other. Seeing this firsthand has shown me that success in sales, or any field, is not about fitting the mold; it is about bringing your own strengths and confidence to the table.
Mentorship has also played a huge role in my experience, having women in leadership who are willing to invest in my development has made a drastic difference in how I see my own potential. Their guidance has given me the confidence to enter a competitive industry knowing that I am just as capable as anyone else, if not more. I have learned how to navigate challenges, advocate for myself, and embrace opportunities as they come.
Beyond professional growth, W Talent Solutions has also taught me the importance of a values-driven business. Our company donates ten percent of its profits to nonprofit organizations and regularly engages in volunteer work. This commitment to social impact has made me realize that business success is not just about numbers; it is about making a difference in the community. Seeing our business thrive while being able to give back has inspired me to think about the kind of impact I want to make in my own career.
Interning at a women-owned business has given me more than just an experience, it has given me a renewed sense of purpose and confidence in my future. It has shown me that leadership comes in many forms and that there is space for me in sales, regardless of traditional industry norms. As I continue my career path, I will carry these lessons with me, knowing I have the skills, mindset, and especially the drive to succeed.
