A Day in the Life of a Predictive Index Promoter
by Asad Khaja
For as long as I can remember, I’ve always been that person that has to be around other people. To use the cliché phrase, I’m a social butterfly, and I can fit in with so many different people and groups, but I never really knew why. Let’s be honest, this isn’t a bad thing, it’s allowed me to make some great close friends, and it’s helped me in my professional career to form close relationships with my clients along the way with great success! But I’ve also struggled at times to understand what some would think is a negative of how I like to interact, which is in an informal way with a side of flexibility. In the working world especially this can sometimes come across as revolting against the rules, while all I need is to figure things out at my own pace.
During my latest venture of figuring out what I wanted to do next in my career, I saw an opening with W Talent Solutions. Initially, I was just excited for the opportunity to work with someone I had a ton of respect for! Then they asked me to take the Predictive Index, and I jumped at the chance, being the sucker I am for Myers-Briggs, Enneagram, or any other behavior/personality test! This time was different though, when I got my results back and read through them, I FINALLY felt understood! Reading about the type of management style was very similar to things I had been asking for from managers, or what I received when I felt heard by my leaders.
As promoters, we’re casual, uninhibited, and persuasive extraverts with a tendency for informality. As I talked about, I love being social, it fills me up. But the casual and uninhibited part really struck home for me. I’m the type of person who can fly by the seat of his pants sometimes. I’m willing to take on a project and figure it out as we go. As I say at home, “Let’s just do it, we can figure out the details later!” Also as a promoter, we can be overly talkative if we’re not careful. So if I’ve ever told a story, believe me, no detail, big or small, was left out!
Taking the PI and understanding my results is helping me to become a better person. But on top of that, it played a major role in helping to figure out I was making the right next step in my career. With W Talent Solutions, I felt like I found a team where who I am is embraced, and I’ll receive coaching on how my profile type tends to need it, and get autonomy to make mistakes and learn as well. I don’t feel like I have to conform to a corporate norm ‘just because’. Instead, I’m able to be myself and make and learn from mistakes while still having a little bit of lightheartedness to keep me interested.
In my short time working with PI, I’ve learned a ton about how I like to work by myself and with others, while also allowing me to better understand people around me as well. Things I’ve thought were quirks about others now make more sense to me, knowing what their profile type is. I’ve come to embrace what it means to the clients and candidates I work with, and how it all comes together to help move an organization forward. It’s about finding the right fit for someone to help them to succeed, so the organization can grow and succeed.
